Yixing clay, Master Zhang Yu
"Aladdin's Lamp" Teapot, 100 ml
The teapot is crafted from purple Yixing clay and fired using the traditional Hei Tao technique, which oxidizes the metal compounds in the clay, giving it a dark, almost black color. The surface is coated with white engobe (a thin layer of liquid white clay) using the Korean-Japanese Fenyin technique, and then covered with a clear glaze. This creates a semi-matte white finish through which the dark base subtly shows through in places. Here and there, crackle effects and brush marks are visible. The inside of the teapot remains unglazed.
