Yixing clay, "Yi Zhai" workshop
Tall "Ju Lun Zhu" Teapot, 110 ml
桃花浅深处,似匀深浅妆。
"Peach blossoms, in shades light and deep, as if finely layered with delicate rouge."Yuan Zhen, "Peach Blossoms"
In the world of Chinese teaware, teapots under 130–150 ml are referred to as "Xiaopin" (miniatures). Crafting such small teapots demands jewel-like precision from the master. This teapot belongs squarely in this category. It is crafted in the classic "Ju Lun Zhu" (巨轮珠 "Giant Wheel Pearl") shape, which pairs a solid, rounded body with a short, straight spout. Thanks to this geometry, the teapot boasts an exceptionally fast, smooth, and balanced pour.
The primary distinction of this teapot is the rare variety of authentic Yixing clay: Baoshan Taohua Ni ("Peach Blossom Clay" from the Baoshan deposit). It earned its name because, after firing in the kiln, it reveals hues ranging from muted pinkish-red to crimson and red-ochre. Its aesthetic charm also lies in the fact that its surface is not meant to look perfectly polished like porcelain. Taohua Ni features a noticeable mineral graininess, yet Chinese sources describe properly prepared clay as remarkably "oily" and pleasing to the touch. Firing yields a richly textured, vibrant surface: fine specks and natural color variegation are visible up close, and with ongoing use, the teapot gradually deepens in tone, acquiring a soft, warm patina. High porosity ensures excellent heat retention, rounding out the tea's profile and enhancing its natural sweetness.
A special note regarding the lid: please be mindful of its distinct shape, which may not feel comfortable for every grip!
