Glass, "MìBái" Studio
Gongdaobei "Flying Bird", 140 ml
Form
I've never been fond of glass chahais, but these truly exquisite pieces make you fall in love at first glance. They are hand-blown in a collaborative process involving several craftsmen. Each shape turns out unique and one-of-a-kind. The glass itself is smoky white with a clear window, in which the water itself seems to turn into smoke.
The piece's aesthetic is inspired by the recurring motif of flying birds in the works of the renowned Chinese painter Zhu Da (Bada Shanren).
Although they look so delicate that one might hesitate to pour hot tea into them, the glass is kiln-fired at temperatures exceeding 1500 °C and easily withstands a range from –20 °C to +150 °C.
