Sign inThis chahai takes my breath away.
It is crafted from clay and fired using the hei tao technique. The surface is coated with white slip (a thin layer of liquid white clay) using the Korean-Japanese fenyin technique, and then coated with a transparent glaze. As a result, a semi-matte white finish emerges, through which the black background peeks in places. Here and there, crackle lines and brush marks are visible.
Its shape deserves special attention. Along the curves of the clay, one can trace every movement of the master's fingers, creating a sense of dynamism, as if the surface were alive. It feels like watching a tectonic fault tear through the earth. There is something primal about it, resonating with a sense of grandeur and awe.
This gongdaobei can be placed over an open flame or charcoal, and the clay it is made from will retain heat for a long time.
