Fukagawa Seiji Manufacture, 1989–1990s
Japanese Vintage Teacup 'Bunny', 45 ml
This teacup is a true gem from the legendary imperial porcelain manufactory Fukagawa Seiji (深川製磁) from Saga Prefecture (Arita). It belongs to the renowned 'Moon Rabbit' collection (月見うさぎ — Tsukimi Usagi), designed at the beginning of the Heisei period (circa 1989–1990s) by artist and shape designer Atsushi Fukagawa.
The base clearly displays the company's signature underglaze backstamp: a stylized Mount Fuji under a roof, with the maker's mark written vertically below: 深川製 (Fukagawa Sei — 'Made by Fukagawa'). Fukagawa Seiji porcelain is appreciated worldwide for its flawless whiteness ('clear as ice') and its distinctive signature shade of vivid cobalt blue, known as Fukagawa Blue.
The motif references traditional Japanese folklore about the rabbit that lives on the Moon making mochi rice cakes.
