Fresh purple buds
Zi Ya Bao, 2026
Weight
Zi Ya Bao (紫芽苞) is one of Yunnan's most unusual teas. It is often referred to as "purple buds." Although it is frequently sold as Sheng puer or white tea, it truly occupies a category of its own and doesn't quite fit into the classical classification of Chinese teas. In terms of raw material, it comes from Yunnan large-leaf tea trees (often old, wild, or semi-wild trees) typically used for puer. However, its processing method is closer to white tea, as it skips the kill-green step (殺青, shaqing)—the defining stage of Sheng puer production. The buds are simply sun-dried using white tea techniques, resulting in a unique flavor profile.
Unlike most teas, Zi Ya Bao is harvested from dormant winter tea buds that have not yet opened. Caffeine synthesis has barely begun at this stage, giving this tea a minimal caffeine content. Its purple hue is due to a high concentration of anthocyanins, and thanks to minimal oxidation, it retains exceptionally high antioxidant levels compared to other teas.
On the palate, you will discover the soft sweetness of honey and white grape typical of white tea, interwoven with unusual notes of medicinal herbs, pine needles, lemon, and even ginger. It brings to mind Carpathian herbal tea enjoyed after soaking in traditional hot tubs (chany). Gently relaxing, thirst-quenching, and refreshing.
Brews wonderfully as a cold brew.
