Clay, Master Peng Yu
Amber Calligraphy Gaiwan, 200 ml
Master Peng Yu’s teaware is imbued with the "beauty of imperfection"—the result of the artisan’s long-standing immersion in the philosophy of wabi-sabi. Each piece captures the dialogue between Earth and Fire, embodying the Eastern spirit of Zen: natural simplicity and primal antique elegance. This aesthetic pursuit is realized through nearly twenty meticulous production stages.
He uses native clay from primary deposits and exclusively wood for firing. No artificial glaze is applied. The sheen is bestowed by the kiln’s very "life": over three days and two nights under extreme temperatures, natural wood ash settles onto the clay, melting and transforming into a living glaze that vitrifies into unique mottling and textures. The master applies the calligraphy entirely by hand.
The gaiwan’s texture is reminiscent of amber, adorned with hand-painted calligraphy on its surface.
Crafted from clay, it has a pleasant heft and retains heat well. It sits comfortably in the hand and offers a smooth, clean pour.
