Clay, Master Peng Yu
“Calligraphy. Earth” Gaiwan, 165 ml
Master Peng Yu's teaware is imbued with the “beauty of imperfection”—the fruit of his years of deep immersion in the wabi-sabi philosophy. Each piece captures a dialogue between Earth and Fire, embodying the Eastern Zen spirit: natural simplicity and primal ancient refinement. This aesthetic pursuit comes to life through nearly twenty meticulous stages of craftsmanship.
He uses native, natural clay from primary deposits and fires his kiln exclusively with firewood. No artificial glazes are applied. The pieces derive their luster from the very “life” of the kiln: over three days and two nights under extreme temperatures, natural wood ash settles on the clay, melting and transforming into a living glaze that cools into unique patterns and textures.
This Gaiwan boasts a striking cracked-earth texture adorned with hand-painted calligraphy. The intense kiln heat formed a layer of crackled green glass at the bottom. A true masterpiece of clay and fire crafted in the wabi-sabi aesthetic.
Made of thick clay, it is pleasantly weighty and retains heat exceptionally well. Comfortable to hold, with a smooth and precise pour.
